Hey! Remember me? It’s Jerry from the neighborhood. You might recognize from my smash success of a YouTube show with my partner Pasq and company where we talk pig skin for 10s of people to listen to twice a week. I’ve missed using the pen, but time has been scarce with the new job for the time being. Hate to make false promises as I do fairly often on this site, but I’ll be back this week with the first Rangers blog of the year and hopefully plenty more to come in the pipeline.
Anyways.
I wanted to come here to talk some Gang Green football. The Jets just lost to the Raiders 16-12 on Sunday Night Football bringing the season record to a resounding 4-6. However if you would’ve told me we’d be 4-6 after Rodgers’ injury week 1 I’d be pretty stoked, and I definitely am, but we gotta be better. That being said, the season is far from over and we’re far from out of it.
First and foremost (and honestly the main reason I’m writing this blog) I want to say this loud and clear. ZACH WILSON IS NOT THE PROBLEM AND IF YOU THINK HE IS YOU’RE THE PROBLEM. Seriously, the days of using Zach as the scape goat are over. Is he the answer? No. Is he the Jets QB of the future? Probably not. But at this current moment in time with the team taking the field every week the issue is not because of him.
Zach threw for 263 yards going 23 for 39 with one interception and no fumbles. Granted, that lone interception was a back breaking interception in the red zone that made things really complicated, but it wasn’t the reason we lost. Zach looked like a QB last night. He was making snap decisions in the pocket he’s struggled to before and honestly that in its own right is a win for me. For what it’s worth, HE WAS ALSO THE LEADING RUSHER FOR THE JETS OFFENSE (we’ll get into that more in a bit). Zach did everything he possibly could’ve have to help out the team and he has officially won me in his corner, I will defend Zach Wilson until it’s time not to so expect me and my cohost fasino to go toe toe on this either Thursday or Sunday live on our YouTube channel!
I think there a ton of issues at hand here to touch upon with number one still being the offensive line being dog shit but I’ve beat that drum dry and everyone knows that’s the case. Let’s start here, we gotta do something about the play calling we really do. There’s no reason (maybe minus the reason of the offensive line) to not be running the ball on 3rd and short with not only Breece Hall in the backfield but Dalvin Cook as well. I saw a clip of Hackett calling a play and Rodgers vehemently disagreeing with it, not too sure if it was overruled or not, but I’m starting to see something here. Hackett may have been the Rodgers whisperer we’ve heard so much about just because Arod alphas him and actually runs the offense not him. Zach’s not gonna do that so he’s gonna fall victim to what we saw on Denver last year and what is going on this year currently.
While on that, it’s time to unleash the breece . Enough is enough, we’ve heard how the training wheels are off but I’m still not seeing it. He took a screen for like 35 yards and had a few decent runs, but he needs to be a focal point of the offense. He’s averaging 5 yards a carry (was, I don’t know how that was impacted) and more importantly I have him on each and every fantasy team I own, JERRY NEEDS PRODUCTION DAMN IT THE PLAYOFFS ARE COMING. And fine, even if you don’t want to use him, what about Cook? Cooks been a ghost and it hasn’t been his fault, he came in for a few runs tonight and looked pretty decent to me, why aren’t we using these guys as the same dual threat Chunt once was? Oh I know why, it’s because water is wet and the Jets will never be able to do offense, that’s just how the book is written.
While on the topic of our offense, I want to have a conversation about Garrett Wilson. Pasq brought this up on the show the other day and I kind of shrugged it off as nothing but then I saw it right in front of my eyes and couldn’t deny it anymore. GW has a major tendency to drop passes that hit him in the chest and for an “elite” level receiver like he’s hailed to be that cannot be happening. I totally understand the fact that you can’t catch everything thrown at you without using stickum on your hands especially when you’re in high trafficked areas like he tends to be, but when Zach Wilson puts it in your bread basket and you can’t come down with it you need to fix that. There aren’t going to be many of those balls thrown (fair criticism, I’m team Zach as stated above) so when they are thrown you need to make the best of them. It’s very much so the difference of the offense. GW did not have a bad game by any means of the word, leading the receivers with 93 yards, but it’s just a little bit of food for thought before he starts Hollywood Browning himself.
What the Jets really really need to work on is discipline. Every single time something was going well a flag came out. Ten yards here 5 yards there, we can’t be letting this happen or else we will never score again. Breece had a TD called back after CJ -not even gonna try it-uzma blatantly held the rusher and I’m particularly mad not only cause it cost me a fantasy matchup but it also cost the game. Flags have very much so been an overwhelming theme of the season and it’s gross, clean it the fuck up.
The Jets are far from dead. The future isn’t very bright, but we’re not dead. We got the Bills and the Dolphins back to back and these are going to be very tough games. These past two losses were supposed to be cake walk wins (on paper at least) but they were anything but. I think the Bills are going to come out angry looking for Monday Night Football revenge, but as I type this I’m watching the Monday Night game where the Bills are playing the Broncos and they are not looking too great. They haven’t been themselves this year but that doesn’t mean they don’t have it in the tank. As for the Dolphins, I’m very curious to see how this one goes. It seems as if we play our best ball against great teams (sup Philly) so who knows maybe we’ll show up and sneak out a win, maybe even two but let’s not get nuts.
I don’t know, call it delusion call it what you want but I’m far from out. I said to many people this year I’m all in on this team and without or without Rodgers I’m making good on that. I’ll be watching them until January and hopefully but unlikely after that. Let’s take the week and right the wrongs, we’re getting a dare I say sub par Bills team on short rest and we need to make that work to our advantage both divisionally and league wide.
In Zach we trust, Jet the fuck up.
