All Gas No Breaks: Hard Knocks Finale Recap

How goes it beautiful people! Jerry here to recap the fifth and final episode of Hard Knocks that aired last night and folks let me tell you something, I AMM JAZZED UP.

This episode was dramatic as fuck, but it was awesome. I watched this episode with some guys at work and I had to contain myself with excitement but man is it looking good to be a jet fan right now. How it’s going to carry out in practice during the actual season? I am really not too sure, but as I’ve said eighteen times before I haven’t been this excited for a season in a long time. It just sucks we’re getting tested as hard as we are out of the gate, but tough battles make strong men.

So like I’ve said in previous blogs, this season we were warned that the cut situation would be different as it was in years past, and it was. They played it smart, pun intended. They showed us 3 “cuts” and none of them ended up being final cuts. They opened with Brownlee being called into a meeting with Saleh and Douglas and things were tense. Despite me looking at the 53 man after last weeks episode and knowing he made the team, I genuinely thought he was going to get cut and I was sad about it. What they did was cruel and unusual punishment and they should be charged for war crimes. To do that to an undrafted rookie, let alone two, was messed up, funny in hindsight and I see what they doing but man I felt for him. At this point as I’m sure you know, they did the same thing ti Gipson but it didn’t hit the same.

Building off of my pun from before, Tanzel Smart did actually get cut and this one hurt. He had such a great camp as we saw and was a hard knocks darling, but as the D line coach said this line is the hardest to make in the NFL due to depth and talent which I get. Smart ended up getting the call to the practice squad which I imagine he isn’t happy about, but he’s still technically on the team and that’s cause for celebration. I’m also fairly certain that this isn’t the last we’ve seen of smart on the 53 man roster and I’m willing to bet he gets some snaps at some point this year.

Also while we’re still on the topic of cuts, we’re training camp cuts always just one large swoop? I feel like historically at least in terms of hard knocks cuts have been something that were on going throughout camp with various cuts each week after pre season games. Not sure if that’s a Mandela effect thing going on but that’s how I remember it.

I also think the new pre season and hard knocks format is bullshit. This week was a good episode, but you know what would’ve made it much better? Having week 1 coverage on top of preparation post camp. If there’s one thing I can say that would make next season and all seasons forward better it’s to break after the final week of pre season and have the finale be the Tuesday after week 1. I know HBO execs are reading my shit, so listen up and give me credit.

We got some play footage of the remaining practices throughout the week and I had to change my pants. This team looks so good Damn but maybe too good it makes me nervous. The name of the game here is depth, we have an unreal WR room, 4 very solid near elite RBs especially with the rookie who’s name I’m not even going to attempt to butcher, an insane defense all around, and to top it off arguably the best QB of a generation to some with a young somewhat promising heir to the throne with a mentor. The only flaw, and it’s a big one is the OL, however there have been improvements being made. Oddly enough though, there has been zero mention of the offensive line woes and changes throughout camp which is kind of shitty but I guess it falls under the umbrella of them wanting to keep things close to the chest like the cuts.

The tail end of the episode featured some high quality team bonding at Aaron Rodgers favorite NYC attraction, Broadway. As a former city slicker I’ve never heard of MJ on Broadway and didn’t know it was a thing but it looked like a ball.I think this is the sort of thing the team needs to keep doing to build the chemistry and trust it takes to be a great team, it’s small, it it’s important.

Before we wrap, as always, things not important for a paragraph but worth mentioning:

  • Arod was definitely doing some extra curricular when he saw that UFO with his buddy from Cal
  • Salehs speech ability is getting better which is huge going into the season
  • My stance stands on Dalvin Cook, happy he’s here and excited, but a bit sad he’s going to be taking snaps away from Breece
  • I like the idea of the wall, but if the season doesn’t go as well as we are planning it might be a bad idea

The time is finally upon us to jet the fuck up folks and I am hyped beyond belief. Morale is high both in the Jerry household as well as one jet drive. I can’t say I’m going into 9/11 expecting a huge win, but if Coach Prime and the Buffs can do it against TCU with the odds against them so can we. Here’s to a great season to come.

Also while we’re here, quick plug for the boys at Sunny Days. Tomorrow night on YouTube we will be doing our first live show kicking off TNF covering Pasqs boys in Detroit going against the defending superbowl champs. Pasq and I worked really hard to get this project off the ground and we’re very excited to do this throughout the season so tune in for some coverage and analysis as well as some picks (not gambling advice). Stay tuned for links on socials we will be sure to blast em out. Until tomorrow night folks, take it easy.
