All Gas No Brakes: Hard Knocks Episode 3

Ladies and germs happy hump day. If you’re reading this that means you and I both stayed up passed our bed times to watch our favorite show for our favorite football team last night. And was it a big episode.

First off I just want to start on this, I think Robert Saleh has a speech fetish but it’s in the early onset and he’s still figuring things out. We saw it in the first episode, and we saw it again last night. Now I will say this, while that wasn’t the best speech I’ve ever heard, it was rather informative and meaningful. I was read a very similar riot act back by my coach in highschool that I like to think made me the man I am today. He used to call me Mr 50/50 and the fact of the matter is there is a ton of those on the football field when there should be no room for that at all. So to Salehs credit, next time you’re putting in the work to do something think back to that speech and make yourself stand out.

Episode 3 was the running back episode, and rightfully so piggy backing off of the huge news from the other week. The cook was in the kitchen, and while we didn’t get to see him in action just yet, we saw everything come to be which of course is the beauty of the show. We also got our first look at Breece back in the fold and lord does he look strong. We all know this can go one of two ways and honestly judging by the tape it looks like we might be going the AP route over the Saquon route (no hate to Saquon, it just took him a little longer to return to form but he certainly did). Hall was reaching speeds of 20+ MPH while running the ball, and while it doesn’t mean all that much since it’s just practice it’s still impressive to see 9 or so months after what could be a career altering injury.

Now I said it in my Dalvin Cook welcome blog, but I still don’t exactly know how I feel about the RB tandem. It’s fantastic to have on paper for certain, but I don’t know how it’s gonna work in practice. I suppose it’ll be a committee which wouldn’t be the worst thing having a young RB coming off injury, a vet who shows flashes but never enough to take the next step to elite with carter and now a once (and soon to be again) top back with cook. There’s also a rookie RB making waves in Israel Abanikanda who might match Breece in speed and talent. How he’ll fit into the fold I don’t know, at this point I’d take him over carter if we had to choose, but he did suffer what appeared to be a tough leg injury against the Bucs. Turns out, just a thigh contusion (not a doctor just play one on TV) so that’s huge news. Ideally, the biggest thing I hope to get out of the RB room is similar vibe from Zach Wilson and Arod for Breece and Cook. I think this is the perfect opportunity for a talented young RB to learn how to hone his craft from a guy who’s been around the block and I’m sure it’ll be the case.

Speaking of Rodgers and Wilson, Aaron Rodgers was a proud father watching Zach play in that pre season game. Hard Knocks took it upon themselves to prove to us first hand that Zach is taking and absorbing everything Rodgers is throwing at him to make him better. We saw it with the progressions and when to run, we saw it with the throwing motions, and then we just saw it with maturity. Now, full disclosure I didn’t get to watch last Saturdays game, I was at a charity event (sick brag!) but I had game cast up the entire time. I didn’t get to witness the beauty of Zach’s time in the game but watching the film back on hard knocks it was very impressive stuff. I’ve said it before and stand by it, pre season is a tough benchmark to judge for a guy who has 2 seasons under his belt, but you can see maturity in confidence in his play. Aaron Rodgers will be the best thing to ever happen to Zach Wilson.

Also real quick rant, that pre season game needs to be won. There were so many chances where the game could’ve been ours and they were just pissed away. Drove down the field only to miss the field goal, forced a 4th and long and had them miss the field goal only for us to go 4 and out, this shouldn’t be happening. I know it’s pre season and it doesn’t matter, but it fucking cost me my ticket being the only loser on a 4 team pre season parlay. I know I know, no one cares.

As far as Hard Knocks itself goes, those story lines I said were lacking are starting to make a comeback, Liev Schrieber must read Sunny Days and be sending them notes (sup sabertooth). We got to take a closer look into Randall Cobb, the rookie RB Abanikanda, journeyman Tanzel Smart, and a few others. And while there’s a solid chance some of those names who aren’t career long best friends with the quarterback will not be here come next Tuesday, that’s not to say it didn’t make it interesting. It’s the same song and dance where you fall in love with the hard knocks darling, happens every single year like clock work. Only difference is, this time around we’re not gonna get the emotional scene when they’re cut and I still don’t know it’ll impact the bottom line of the show.

Parting words not important enough for a paragraph:

  • Why do all football coaches have the same vocal cadence? Is that what they teach at the conventions my coach would go to every summer? I thought they just drank beers and farted
  • Sauce can’t be running off the bench and getting into fights like he was. I made my stance clear on fights last week, but when you’re an up and coming superstar who needs to be on the field you can’t be doing that shit
  • Fuck Mike Evans. You never ever call a fat guy fat, that’s just not cool. We know we’re fat you know we’re fat you don’t need to remind us. Fuck you mike evans
  • Randall Cobb congrats on the sex
  • Aaron Rodgers and Garrett Wilson is going to be a lethal combo and I can’t wait to watch it.
  • This a very deep football team and I think it’s both a blessing and a curse.
  • Fuck Mike Evans.

This coming Saturday should be very interesting. Jets Giants is always a big time pre season game, but we’re gonna get our first taste of 8 and the rest of the starters to really see how things are gonna work out. We also get the giants in the regular season so maybe they’ll be some carryover bad blood to make that game even more interesting. We shall see, I learned my lesson and don’t think I’ll be putting some skin on the game but I’ll definitely be watching. Until next week, Jet the fuck Up.
