2/3 In The Desert

Our Mets are fighting for their lives, and at the very least, they look like they will make the rest of this summer interesting! After taking 2/3 at home vs the Giants, they walked into Arizona and continued their winning ways. With one more game left in the series, the Metropolitans have taken the first two games and look to make it a clean sweep against the 50 win Diamondbacks! With “Cookie” Carrasco on the bump tonight, that doesn’t feel as reassuring, but neither did winning 4 straight games, and here we are!

On the morning of June 30th, they were 10 games out of a wild card spot, today on July 6th, they’re 6.5 games back! What a difference a week makes! Now if you don’t believe the Mets can turn this season around, I honestly couldn’t blame you. I’d be lying if I told you that I never lost hope with this team, but at the same time, I never truly believed they were as bad as their record currently says they are. I think If Buck Showalter honestly managed the bullpen with some more urgency like he has this past week, we’re closer to a game above or below .500. At this point now, they’re in a hole, and we can’t go back and change the past. However what they can do is to continue to fire on all cylinders like they have. The offense has really come alive this past week and that’s been the saving grace of this team. Starting pitching hasn’t been very good, but if they can continue to get 6 innings out of the starters on a regular basis, the idea of a turn-around really isn’t out of reach.

Ultimately the season really does come down to the starting pitching, and it’s on 3 guys: Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, and Jose Quintana. If those 2 guys can be 3/4 of what they once were, and Quintana can be a serviceable #4 pitcher, there is plenty of faith to be had. Senga has been more than a solid #3 starter, and if they are relevant by the deadline, you can bet this front office will have the green light to seek help in the bullpen. The pressure is truly on for the top 2 “aces” of this rotation, and man, if they did somehow light it up this second half, that would erase the absolute disaster the start of this season has been. A major reason this bullpen has looked as bad as it has wasn’t all because of the absence of Edwin Diaz, but really from the starters lack of innings. Show me a group of guys that can get you through the 6th inning each night and I’ll show you a sneaky wild card team come October! KEEP THE FAITH AND LFGM!!
