The Mets aren’t playing their best baseball, but they are treading water at the very least. One game above .500 after starting the season 14-7 is definitely not where we all want to be right now, but considering the state of the pitching staff, it could have been much worse. Every season has it’s peaks and valleys, very rarely is the best team in baseball on May 30th the same team that wins the World Series, at the same rate, with the highest payroll in baseball, it is fair to expect better results.
Memorial Day Weekend just passed us, and I would say that’s a fair amount of time in a baseball season to start to judge a team a little bit. Some generalizations that we can make:
Home>Away: (13-9 @ Home, 15-18 Away) not a huge sample size and clearly they have played much more on the road, but so far it really does seem like they struggle outside of Citi Field. They play half of their games there, so it is encouraging to see them winning at home, you just want to see them get closer to .500 on the road.
The Kids Can Play: Everywhere you look on twitter, Mets fans are clamoring for the team to play the young kids (Alverez, Baty and Vientos) every night, and for good reason! All 3, especially Alverez, have shown progression as the AB’s increase. They are the future of this franchise, so the reasons to play them every night are self explanatory, especially when they are out-performing the struggling bench bats. On the one hand I semi understand Buck Showalter going to vets, specifically in the beginning of 2023, hoping guys who have been in the league for a while can finally figure it out again. But at this point now, the young guys have produced, they have won you games, its time for Alverez to be hitting no less than 5th in the lineup. Ronny Mauricio’s name is brought up on a daily basis and everything we read on twitter tells us that he’s going to be here soon, which is definitely another thing to look forward to.
Offense Needs to Take Charge: We really don’t know what we can expect to see from the pitching staff as a whole, it seems like every outing is completely different. Not a single pitcher has shown us that they can be super reliable this year, but they also haven’t shown us to lose all hope (not talking about David Peterson). What we do know however, is that the offense is littered with talent, and that there should be no shortage of runs scored on a nightly basis. Unfortunately, that has yet to really happen. We need to know that if the starter shit’s the bed, our offense can pick him back up and throw 6 or 7 on the board each night at will. Is that really a fair expectation? Not really, but if this Mets team wants to continue to tread water until Quintana is healthy/get to the deadline and look at options, they need the offense to basically put up close to video game numbers for the next 2 months.
Brandon Nimmo is Legit: The man is a legitimate MLB center fielder. He has eliminated all doubt about his ability to hit, field, run the bases, and lead a group of men. Nimmo literally does it all. He’s playing the best baseball of his life batting over .300, knocking the ball all around the field, and literally robbing “would be” fly balls over the fence. There is nothing more you can ask out of #9 and he’s earning every penny of that extension he signed this offseason.
I cannot tell you how far this team will go, or how many games they’ll win in 2023. Truth be told I am still trying to figure out if the New York Mets are a good or a bad team. What I feel confident in saying is that they have a world of potential and the talent to be part of the post season, I also think that the future is bright in Flushing. The “Baby Mets” are legit, and they need to be given the opportunities to play every night and get comfortable facing MLB pitching. These young guys won’t get any better sitting on the bench every other night, they need consistency, and that ultimately starts with Buck allowing that to happen, and setting the table for these kids to thrive. We can only hope. As always, keep the faith, and LFGM!
