The title says it all. There’s literally no excuse I can create in my head to justify what the fuck we all watched/listened to these past 3 days. Everything top to bottom fucking SUCKED. I’ll break down all 3 phases as best I can, but first I really do need to give a ton of credit to the Mets radio broadcast, led by the great, Howie Rose. This performance we witnessed in Milwaukee was so foreign to the fundamentally strong, death by contact baseball that has been a staple here since Buck Showalter got the job as manager of the ball club. Keith Raad and Pat McCarthy have been fantastic additions in the booth to take over after Wayne Randazzo got his well deserved shot to finally do television broadcasts in Los Angeles for the Angels. I have a pretty long commute everyday, and any game that starts before 5 or 6 in the afternoon, I have to listen to the vast majority of it on the radio. We really are spoiled here in New York with the quality of radio broadcasts we get for our baseball teams, It’s something not every fan notices until you’re forced to, and you realize how great both the Mets and Yankees booths truly are.
Offense: Someone has to wake these guys up. We finally saw some pop today, it was great seeing Pete start to heat up and put balls into the stands, and Lindor did his part too knocking in runs, but outside of that it was barren. I mean, we all knew going in that this team was lacking some pop, but if you could somewhat replicate what you did last year and create death by contact and steal bases here and there, you could make up for it…at least till the deadline where we could hopefully aquire someone as a rental to provide a little more thump in the lineup for the playoff push. It seems I may have been very very wrong. Now, to be fair, it literally April 5th and we aren’t even 10 games in yet. We need 5 or 6 guys in this lineup to be having good at bats each night, it can’t be Alonso and Lindor today, Pham yesterday, Canha before that, etc. And as much as I stress the lack of power, honestly, they could have won at least Game 1 had they just strung together decent at bats and found ways to get on base at a minimum. There’s plenty of blame to go around right now but in my opinion, this is the most pressing and significant. A great offense can mask issues throughout the season and give you time to figure things out, but at the end of the day, if you can’t score runs, you can’t win shit in this league. Also Bretty Baty is now listed as day to day with thumb inflammation, I think that’s something significant to watch this month as Escobar continues to struggle and zero production comes out of the DH position.
Starting Pitching: What the fuck is going on with Max? If there was anyone we believed we could hang our hats on and count on to drag us out of a funk it would be Max. 3 runs on opening day, that I can get over. First start of the season maybe you got some jitters, but shit, second start a game under the lights in Milwaukee and you shit your fuckin pants in 5 innings, 5 earned runs??? Are you kidding? 3 back to back to back moon shots into the stands? Scherzer is better than that and if we want any shot at doing anything this year, we need him to be better. And for the record, I do believe he’s better and he’ll bounce back and figure it out. Carrasco looked brutal but as I said before that was his first start so I’ll give him another bad outing before I decide to rip him a new asshole on this page. David Peterson was all over the place and this was reminiscent of one of his starts earlier in his career where things start OK, and derail very quickly. I believe David has the talent and demeanor to be a legit starter in this league. Outside of the shortened 2020 season we haven’t really seen him do it start to finish, but overall he has earned his spot to be here and some time to figure things out.
Bullpen: I mean not the worst part of this team, if I had to rank the issues, this would be at the bottom of my list, but nonetheless, still a problem. Brooks Raley got his shit pushed in Tuesday night (5 runs), Tommy Hunter got killed Monday afternoon (5 runs), and Ottovino today gives up a walk off home run in the bottom of the 9th, the one day we actually had a shot to wrap up this series with some dignity. Some blame can definitely be given to Buck, bringing out Robertson in the 8th to face the bottom of the lineup and Ottovino to face the top 3, but ultimately these 2 guys should be able to face anyone anytime. They are our guys that we have to lean on in Diaz’s absence this year, and giving up runs in clutch situations like that really makes things that much more uncomfortable going forward.
Monday-Wednesday sucked, and hopefully the Mets left that shit in Milwaukee. Come out here against Miami and win this series and get your mojo back, you can put this week in the rear view a lot easier and move on. There’s plenty of talent on this team, way too much to see results like this. The extra days rest they just got after the cancellation of tomorrows game (moving it to Friday at 1:10 PM) should really give them a minute to decompress and get their heads on straight for this upcoming series against the Marlins. If you’re at the stadium this Saturday come say hello in Section 139!! Keep your heads up Mets fans, and LFGM!
